Company Adds Former Zynga Distinguished Engineer to Bolster Widely-adopted Cocos2D-x Engine Technology

MENLO PARK, Calif. – Oct. 10, 2013 – International mobile gaming company Chukong Technologies today announced that it will be reorganizing its sub-brands CocoaChina and Coco (formerly Punchbox) under its parent name in the U.S. In addition, Chukong Technologies will formally integrate the world-class Cocos2D-x game engine under its corporate structure, which the company has previously developed, sponsored and maintained.

“We’ve generated a huge amount of awareness and community goodwill in the U.S. as CocoaChina, and we have chosen to take on our parent name of Chukong Technologies to maximize our brand’s impact worldwide,” said Lei Zhang, U.S. General Manager. “Under Chukong Technologies, we look forward to continuing CocoaChina’s developer partnerships and telling our story about the Chinese mobile gaming opportunity.”

Chukong Technologies was previously the sole sponsor of the Cocos2D-x game engine, an open-source cross platform 2D game engine used by more than 400,000 developers worldwide including top-tier studios such as Konami, Gamevil, Zynga, GREE and Glu Mobile. Cocos2D-x’s inclusion in Chukong Technologies’ corporate structure will allow for greater resources to be devoted to the development of the engine in the future.

Harnessing Industry Expertise to Drive Developer Platform Forward

To direct the company’s developer toolset, Chukong has hired Ricardo Quesada, one of the original creators of the Cocos2D engine and previously a Distinguished Engineer at Zynga. In his role of Chief Architect, Quesada will improve and expand the engine and coordinate the creation of Coco Studio, a comprehensive toolset for developers to help build cross-platform games for mobile devices.

“While I enjoyed my time at Zynga immensely, I’ve always had the itch to build platforms rather than just games—that’s why I created the Cocos2D engine to begin with,” said Quesada. “Chukong’s platform-centric mission aligns with my expertise and interest, and I can’t wait to start building out the engine I helped write almost a decade ago.”

Cocos2D is one of the world’s most widely used game engines, and the cross-platform functionality of Cocos2D-x has made it the engine of choice for developers of all sizes. Thousands of games have been built with Cocos2D-x, which have been collectively downloaded more than 2 billion times.
