Gesture Control Leader Powering Innovative New Way to Report on the Weather

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM – March 12, 2013 – SoftKinetic, the world’s leading 3D gesture recognition software and solution provider, today announced that its iisu® middleware technology is being used to power an innovative new weather report by the Radio Télévision Belge Francophone (RTBF), the public broadcasting organization of the French Community of Belgium. Broadcasters at RTBF are now able to move around and trigger 3D animations with gestures in a virtual set that is more interactive and dynamic than ever before. “In bringing this technology into the studio, our goal was to change not only the way that the weather report was produced, but also change the look and feel of the report for viewers,” said Thibault Baras, director of the digital graphics and animation studio Dreamwall and virtual studio production center Keywall. “We are very pleased to have partnered with SoftKinetic in order to implement gesture recognition technology into our offering.”

This technology allows broadcasters to present their weather report without using a remote to cue changes in visuals, leaving their hands free to “touch” cards, menus, and other graphic elements on the viewer’s screen. The implementation of gesture recognition technology by RTBF makes for a much more visually appealing and natural broadcast.

“Gesture recognition and control is making waves in a number of different markets, from digital entertainment to advertising and now broadcasting,” said Michel Tombroff, CEO of SoftKinetic. “It is a great thrill to tune in to the nightly news and see our technology at work as part of RBTF’s weather report!”
